According to the State of Alaska Department of Transportation website (www.dot.alaska.gov), studded tires are not allowed from May 1st to October 1st for all communities north of Ninilchik. If you live in Anchor Point, Homer, Kodiak or a city or town in Southeast Alaska, you must remove your studded tires by April 15th.
The tire pressure you use should be comparable to the tire pressure the vehicle manufacturer recommends. This information can normally be found on a sticker on the inside of the driver's door. Tire pressure requirements may change depending on the type of vehicle and the type and size of tire. Manufacturer recommendations should always be followed for safety purposes.
Depending on the depth of your tire tread, you may need to purchase new winter tires every few years or so. This also depends on how much you drive your vehicle, and what type of terrain you are driving on. When a winter/snow tire has worn to about 6/32", it's ability to provide beneficial snow traction will start to diminish.
If you were to use just two winter tires on the front or rear of your vehicle, you would lose balance and traction, possible causing you to lose control of the vehicle if you were to hit a patch of ice or snow. If your car has an anti-lock brake system (ABS), the system effectiveness would be diminished.
